The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with Orion Township, will begin work on Brown Road, from east of the west leg of Giddings Road to Lapeer Road/M-24, on Monday, June 2.

This section of Brown Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction throughout the project. Business access will be maintained. Upon completion, the project will improve safety and accessibility for both drivers and pedestrians traveling along this section of Brown Road.

The approximately $8 million project is funded by a state grant received by Orion Township. The project is expected to be completed in mid-November.

The work includes:

  • Removing the existing concrete pavement on Brown Road.
  • Paving the road with asphalt.
  • Constructing non-motorized pathways along the following road segments:
    1. North side of Brown Road (from east of the west leg of Giddings Road to Lapeer Road/M-24).
    2. East side of Giddings Road (from Brown Road to Silver Bell Road).
    3. South side of Silver Bell Road (from Giddings Road to Lapeer Road/M-24).
    4. South side of Brown Road (from the east side of the Auburn Hills Department of Public Works Building to the west leg of the Brown Road/Giddings Road intersection).
  • Installing a new traffic signal at Brown Road and the south Giddings Road intersection, which will also be the location of a new gate into the General Motors plant.
  • Adding a new center left turn-lane and right-turn lane on Brown Road near Glenmeade Lane/GM Gate 8.
  • Constructing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pedestrian crosswalks at Brown Road/west leg of Giddings Road intersection (near the FedEx facility).
  • Placing new pavement markings and installing new traffic signs.

Starting Monday, June 2, two-way traffic will be shifted to the south side of Brown Road to allow Pro-Line Asphalt of Washington Township, the project's contractor, to begin installing a pathway on the north side of the road. Once the pathway work is substantially completed along this section of road, pavement removal work will begin on the north half of Brown Road.

This section of Brown Road carries approximately 9,700 vehicles daily.
