The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with the City of Madison Heights, expects to begin resurfacing work Wednesday, May 7, on John R Road, Dartmouth Street (just north of 12 Mile Road) to 14 Mile Road in Madison Heights. The start date was moved from May 5 due to weather.
During the work, one lane on this section of John R Road will remain open in each direction. Motorists should expect some delays. Access to side streets and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
The approximately $4.4 million project is being paid for with federal funds and contributions from RCOC, the City of Madison Heights and Oakland County general government (through its Tri-Party Program).
The project includes:
- Removing existing pavement and resurfacing with two layers of asphalt.
- Repairing curbs and gutters.
- Installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pedestrian crosswalks.
- Minor drainage improvements.
- Modernizing traffic signals at the following intersections:
- John R Road/Ajax Street
- John R Road/Irving Street
The work will be done in two stages:
- Stage 1 of the project includes the section of John R Road from Dartmouth Street to Irving Street. This stage is expected to take place from May 7 through late July.
- Stage 2 of the project includes the section of John R Road from Irving Street to 14 Mile Road. This stage is expected to start after Stage 1 is complete. The entire project is expected to be completed by fall.
This section of John R Road carries approximately 28,000 vehicles daily. The contractor for the project is Pro-Line Asphalt of Washington Township.
