The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) expects to begin resurfacing work on 12 Mile Road, Telegraph Road/US 24 to Northwestern Highway/M-10 in Southfield, starting Monday, April 7.
During the work, one lane of this section of 12 Mile Road will remain open in each direction. Access to side streets and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
The $5.1 million project will be paid for with federal funds and contributions from RCOC, the City of Southfield and Oakland County general government (through its Tri-Party Program).
The project includes:
- Removing existing pavement and resurfacing with two layers of asphalt.
- Repairing curbs and gutters.
- Installing new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pedestrian crosswalks.
- Upgrading the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) bus stops.
- Modernizing traffic signals at the following intersections:
- Franklin Road/12 Mile Road.
- Case Avenue/12 Mile Road.
- Dufty Street/12 Mile Road.
- Lockdale Street/12 Mile Road.
Preparation work for the project started in late 2024, when the contractor, Dan’s Excavating of Shelby Township, removed and replaced two culverts under 12 Mile Road. Additionally, DTE recently completed rebuilding its infrastructure under this section of 12 Mile, which had been destroyed by a fire.
This section of 12 Mile Road carries approximately 23,500 vehicles daily.
The project is expected to be completed in the late summer.
