The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) joins the national educational effort promoting "See Tracks? Think Train!" week, which runs through September 29. Formerly known as “Rail Safety Week,” this initiative is designed to prevent collisions, injuries, and fatalities near railroad tracks and highway-rail crossings.
Although the RCOC does not maintain railroad crossings, raising public awareness about rail safety can play a critical role in reducing incidents across Oakland County and beyond. In 2023, there were three crashes involving trains in Oakland County, but no fatalities. Statewide, Michigan recorded 76 crashes involving trains, resulting in three fatalities, according to the Michigan State Police 2023 Statewide Traffic Crash Data Year End Report (see page 60 in the following report: https://tinyurl.com/mvstcy8p).
"Joining this national effort underscores the importance of education and vigilance near railroad crossings," said RCOC Managing Director, Dennis Kolar. "Simple actions, such as obeying signals and being aware of oncoming trains, can save lives."

Some tips to stay safe near tracks:
- Always stop when the crossing signals are active.
- Never walk or drive around lowered gates.
- Be aware that trains are closer and faster than they appear.
