[ARCHIVED] RCOC REMINDS MOTORISTS THAT MAY IS MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH

May is MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS Month(1)

As May approaches, the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) joins the nationwide effort to raise awareness about motorcycle safety during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. With warmer weather inviting more motorcyclists onto the roads, it's crucial for both drivers and riders to prioritize safety and share the road responsibly.

According to national statistics, motorcycle fatalities account for a significant portion of traffic-related deaths each year. In Oakland County, there were 16 fatalities involving motorcycles from 2020 through 2023. To reduce these numbers and promote safer roadways, RCOC is highlighting key safety tips for both vehicle drivers and motorcycle riders:

  • Stay vigilant and aware. Drivers should always check blind spots and mirrors for motorcycles before changing lanes or making turns. Motorcyclists, on the other hand, should stay visible and avoid riding in vehicle blind spots.

  • Follow traffic laws. Drivers and riders must obey speed limits, traffic signals and other road signs. Safe and lawful driving behavior is essential for preventing accidents.

  • Wear proper gear. Motorcyclists are encouraged to wear helmets, protective clothing and reflective gear to enhance visibility and reduce the risk of serious injuries in case of a crash.

  • Avoid distractions. Eliminate distractions such as texting, phone calls or adjusting music while driving or riding. Focused attention on the road is crucial for everyone's safety.

Eric McPherson, vice chair of the RCOC Board and a motorcycle enthusiast, emphasized the importance of collaboration and awareness in enhancing road safety. "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month reminds all road users to share the road responsibly,” he stated. “By practicing caution, staying alert and respecting each other's space on the road, we can work together to reduce crashes and fatalities and make our roadways safer for everyone."
