While Waldon Road is currently closed to through traffic from Clintonville Road to Montclair Drive in eastern Independence Township and western Orion Township as part of the ongoing gravel-road paving project, the contractor for the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will completely close the road just east of Clintonville Road on Monday, March 18, to replace a culvert under the road.
Because the road will be completely closed at the culvert, access to homes and businesses east of the culvert will only be available from the east. The culvert work is expected to be completed by approximately Monday, March 25. However, the larger gravel-road paving project will continue through the fall, and the road will remain closed to through traffic.
The full closure for the culvert was originally announced as March 11 to March 18.
The detour for through traffic throughout the project is Waldon Road to Baldwin Road to Maybee Road to Clintonville Road, back to Waldon Road and vice versa.
The first construction phase of the Waldon Road project, from Baldwin Road to Montclair Drive in Orion Twp., was completed in fall of 2023. That work included gravel-road paving, replacement of the Sashabaw Creek culvert and construction of an eight-foot-wide shared-use pathway adjacent to the road from Montclair Drive to Baldwin Road.
The approximately $15 million project is being paid for through federal road funding and by RCOC, Independence Township, Orion Township and Oakland County general government (through the Tri-Party Program).
Remaining construction and safety upgrades include:
- Paving the unpaved section of Waldon Road, Montclair Drive to Clintonville Road, with asphalt, including paved shoulders.
- Construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Waldon and Clintonville roads (construction to start approximately July 1).
- Realigning the curves along Waldon Road on the Independence Township/Orion Township border to improve safety.
- Replacing two large culverts under the road.
- Realignment of a small stream under the road
