[ARCHIVED] NOVI RD., 8 MILE RD. TO ALLEN RD. IN NOVI AND NORTHVILLE, IS CLOSED THROUGH MID-NOV.

Novi Road, 8 Mile to 9 Mile Road, detour map for phase 1 and phase 2 of the project

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with the cities of Novi and Northville, has closed Novi Road, from 8 Mile Road to Allen Drive (just south of Guernsey Farms Dairy) in the two communities until mid-November as the first phase of a major resurfacing project.

In mid-November, the project will stop for the winter, and the road will re-open, but resume in spring of 2026 with the major resurfacing of the section from Allen Road to 9 Mile Road.

The 2025 work includes reconstructing the curved section of Novi Road south of Allen Road.

During the 2025 closure, the detour route for through traffic will be 8 Mile Road to Meadowbrook Road to 9 Mile Road, back to Novi Road, and vice versa. Access to homes and businesses within the construction zone is maintained using 9 Mile Road to Novi Road. Novi Road is completely closed from just south of the Tree Tops apartment entrance to 8 Mile Road.

In the spring of 2026, Novi Road, 8 Mile Road to 9 Mile Road, will close to northbound traffic for the continued construction. The northbound traffic detour will be 8 Mile Road to Beck Road to 10 Mile Road, back to Novi Road. During this phase, the road will remain open to southbound traffic. The project will be completed in summer of 2026.

The approximately $6.9 million project will be paid for mostly with federal funds along with matching dollars from RCOC, Novi, Northville and Oakland County general government (through the Tri-Party Program).

The project includes:

  • Reconstructing the curve between 8 Mile Road and Allen Road/the Rouge River.
  • Pavement milling (grinding off old pavement) and repaving with two layers of asphalt.
  • Adding a continuous center left-turn lane throughout this section of Novi Road.
  • Adding two northbound lanes and one southbound lane from the Rouge River/Allen Drive to 9 Mile Road.
  • Repairing the bridge over the Rouge River.
  • Placing curb and gutter where appropriate within the project.
  • Installing storm sewers to improve drainage.
  • Reconstructing side-street and driveway approaches throughout the project.
  • Improving pedestrian crosswalks to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Installing High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) beacons for pedestrians just north of Galway Street.
  • Upgrading traffic signs and pavement markings.

The contractor for the project is Dan’s Excavating of Shelby Township. This section of Novi Road carries approximately 13,700 vehicles daily.
