The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) has issued a permit to a private developer to close the Kent Lake Road/Silver Lake Road intersection in Lyon Township from Saturday, June 14, through early September, for reconstruction and safety enhancements.
The intersection work is being conducted in conjunction with a private housing development on the northeast corner of the intersection. The road work is being undertaken and paid for by Lombardo Homes of Shelby Township.
Planned improvements include:
- Installation of a traffic signal at the intersection.
- Construction of turn lanes at the intersection.
- Addition of sidewalks on both sides of Silver Lake Road and on the west side of Kent Lake Road from the intersection to the nearby elementary school.
- Installation of a pedestrian crosswalk across Silver Lake Road near Blake’s Orchard, featuring High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) beacons.
- Installation of storm sewers in the intersection area.
These enhancements are designed to improve traffic flow and significantly increase safety for both pedestrians and motorists in the area.
During the closure, traffic detours are as follows:
- Eastbound Silver Lake Road traffic: Silver Lake Road to Kensington Road north to Grand River Avenue, back to Kent Lake Road (to go north on Kent Lake/Huron River Parkway) or Grand River Avenue to New Hudson Drive to Pontiac Trail (to go west or south on Pontiac Trail).
- Westbound Silver Lake Road traffic: Pontiac Trail to New Hudson Drive to Grand River Avenue to Kensington Avenue back to Silver Lake Road.
- Southbound Kent Lake Road to Silver Lake Road traffic: Kent Lake Road to Grand River Avenue to Kensington Road to Silver Lake Road.
- Southbound Kent Lake Road to Pontiac Trail traffic: Grand River Avenue to New Hudson Drive southbound to Pontiac Trail.
The June 14 start date may change depending on the progress of ongoing resurfacing work on Grand River Avenue in Livingston County. That project needs to be substantially completed to accommodate traffic detours.
The Kent Lake Road/Silver Lake Road intersection carries approximately 14,000 vehicles daily.
