[ARCHIVED] RESURFACING AND SAFETY PROJECT ON 12 MILE RD., INKSTER TO EAST OF MIDDLEBELT RD STARTS APR. 14

Traffic Alert Sign

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will begin resurfacing work and safety enhancements on 12 Mile Road, Inkster Road to Autumn Ridge, just east of Middlebelt Road, in Farmington Hills, starting Monday, April 14.

During the work, westbound traffic will be maintained on 12 Mile Road, but the road will be closed for eastbound traffic. The eastbound closure is expected to begin at approximately 9 a.m. on April 14. The detour route for eastbound traffic will be Middlebelt Road to 13 Mile Road to Northwestern Highway/M-10 and back to 12 Mile Road.

The approximately $4 million project will be paid for mostly with federal funds and RCOC dollars.

The eight-tenths of a mile project includes:

  • Milling (grinding off old pavement) and repaving with asphalt.
  • Adding a continuous, center left-turn lane throughout this section of 12 Mile Road to improve safety.
  • Improving drainage.
  • Placing curbs and gutters where appropriate within the project.
  • Improving pedestrian crosswalks to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Upgrading traffic signals within the project limits.

Additionally, the 12 Mile Road/Inkster Road intersection will be closed in two phases to reconstruct the north and south halves of the intersection. Details of those closures and detours will be announced soon.

The contractor for the project is M.L. Chartier of Fair Haven. This section of 12 Mile Road carries approximately 20,000 vehicles daily.

The project is expected to be completed in early October.
