The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will lift seasonal weight restrictions on its non-all-weather roads effective 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2. The restrictions were imposed on March 3 to help protect roads during the spring thaw.
Each year, as temperatures rise and the ground begins to thaw, RCOC implements weight limits per state law. When the road surface thaws, non-all-weather roads become more vulnerable to damage, meaning loads that wouldn’t typically impact the pavement could cause significant harm.
“These restrictions help extend the life of our roads and minimize potholes,” explained RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar. “By limiting heavy loads during the critical thawing period, we can reduce costly road repairs and improve overall road conditions.”
The restrictions do not apply to passenger vehicles or school buses. Of RCOC’s more than 2,700 miles of roads, approximately 2,000 miles are classified as non-all-weather and are subject to seasonal weight limits.
Enforcement of weight restrictions is carried out by weighmasters employed by RCOC, the state, local communities and the Sheriff’s Department. Violations can result in citations.
Truck operators can access a “Truck Operators’ Map” to determine which roads have weight restrictions through the following methods:

• By Phone: Call RCOC’s Department of Customer Services Permits Division at 248-858-4804.
• In Person: Visit RCOC’s office at 2420 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford Township (Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:15 p.m., excluding holidays).
