Want to make a difference in your community? The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) is seeking volunteers to help clean county roadsides through its Adopt-A-Road program.

“This program is a great way for organizations and individuals to give back to their communities,” said RCOC Chair Eric McPherson. “Every piece of litter removed makes a difference, and we appreciate the volunteers who make the program possible.”

Volunteer groups that adopt a road segment are asked to pick up litter during at least two of the three scheduled cleanup periods each year — spring, summer and fall. The 2025 Adopt-A-Road cleanup dates are:

• Spring: April 5-13

• Summer: July 12-20

• Fall: Sept. 20-28

Groups interested in adopting a road section should contact the RCOC Permits Division at 248-858-4891 or email adoptaroad@rcoc.org. Participating organizations receive training, orange safety vests and garbage bags to assist with cleanup efforts.

As a token of its appreciation, RCOC places Adopt-A-Road signs at both ends of designated road sections to recognize volunteer groups. The RCOC Board of Road Commissioners approves road segment assignments.

Important reminders for volunteers:

• Call the RCOC Permits Division to arrange the litter bags pickup after the cleanup.

• Keep your contact information up to date with RCOC.

• Request additional garbage bags or vests as needed.

• Motorists can help keep volunteers safe by slowing down when they see volunteer cleanup crews working along the road and avoiding littering.

Three-hundred-seventy-eight organizations and volunteers have adopted 586 miles of roads. Join RCOC in making a positive impact — sign up today to Adopt-A-Road and help keep Oakland County clean.
