As winter approaches, the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) reminds residents whose mailboxes are on a post adjacent to the road that October is “Shake Your Mailbox” month, a perfect time to ensure that mailboxes are sturdy enough to withstand the snowplowing season. Snow thrown from plows can damage weak or unstable mailboxes, so it’s crucial to check the condition of your mailbox before winter hits.
“October is the ideal time for residents to make sure their mailboxes are ready for winter,” RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar said. “Tightening the bolts, securing the post and doing a quick inspection can save your mailbox from being sent flying when the snow arrives.”
Tips for ensuring your mailbox is winter-ready:
• Shake it: Gently shake your mailbox to check for stability.
• Tighten any loose bolts or screws.
• Make sure the post is secure and won’t lean or fall under pressure.
• Replace any worn-out parts before the snow arrives.
Mailboxes installed with a solid post and at the correct height and distance from the road can help minimize damage during snow removal. A little preparation now can go a long way toward preventing headaches once the plows are out in full force.
