[ARCHIVED] PRELIMINARY WORK FOR 2025 CONSTRUCTION ON 12 MILE RD., INKSTER TO EAST OF MIDDLEBELT, STARTS OCT. 1

Traffic Alert Sign

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will begin preliminary work Thursday, Oct. 1, for the planned 2025 project to resurface and provide safety enhancements on 12 Mile Road, Inkster Road to Autumn Ridge, just east of Middlebelt Road, in Farmington Hills.

The preliminary work, including storm-sewer installation and tree removals, will involve lane closures on 12 Mile Road. The work will last approximately two weeks. Two-way traffic will be maintained during this preliminary work.

The approximately $4 million project will be paid for mostly with federal funds and RCOC dollars.

The eight-tenths of a mile project includes:

  • Milling (grinding off old pavement) and repaving with asphalt (2025).
  • Adding a continuous, center left-turn lane throughout this section of 12 Mile Road to improve safety (2025).
  • Improving drainage (2024 and 2025).
  • Placing curbs and gutters where appropriate within the project (2025).
  • Improving pedestrian crosswalks to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (2025).
  • Upgrading traffic signals within the project limits (2025).
  • Tree removal (2024).

Most of the construction will start in the spring of 2025 and conclude in early fall. The start date will be announced in 2025. During the 2025 work, westbound traffic will be maintained on 12 Mile Road, but the road will be closed for eastbound traffic. The detour route for eastbound traffic will be Middlebelt Road to 12 Mile Road to Northwestern Highway/M-10 and back to 12 Mile Road.

Additionally, the 12 Mile Road/Inkster Road intersection will be closed in 2025 to reconstruct the north and south halves of the intersection. This work will be done in two phases. Details for those closures and detours will be announced in 2025.

The contractor for the project is M.L. Chartier of Fair Haven. This section of 12 Mile Road carries approximately 13,600 vehicles daily.
