The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) continues to work closely with West Bloomfield Township authorities to address what is believed to be cooking oil dumped in the area of Square Lake Road, west of Middlebelt Road.
During the overnight hours, RCOC dispatched a crew member to the area after the oil spill was reported. Additional crews have been on site today using a compound to absorb oil on several roads impacted by the oil spill.
The Oakland County Fire Mutual Aid Association Hazardous Materials Team was called to assess the situation and determined the oil was non-hazardous.
The roads impacted are:
- Square Lake Road, west of Middlebelt Road
- Middlebelt Road, north of Square Lake Road
- Midpine Road
- Pine Ridge Road
- Chata Road
- Figa Avenue
Additionally, fabric-like bags have been placed near culverts to absorb oil runoff and help prevent the substance from reaching streams and lakes.
Because the oil has made the roads slick in spots, drivers should use caution.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the West Bloomfield Township Police Department at 248-975-9200. It is believed the oil was illegally dumped.
