The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) in partnership with the City of Farmington Hills, will conduct a public-information meeting Thursday, April 4, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., about the planned 2025 resurfacing of 12 Mile Road between Inkster Road Autumn Ridge Street in Farmington Hills.

The meeting will take place at the city’s Costick Activities Center, 28600 West Eleven Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48336 (in the Wexford Room). The meeting will be open-house format – there will not be a formal presentation, but anyone interested can stop in at any time during the meeting to review plans or discuss the project with RCOC staff.

            The project will include:

  • Milling (grinding off) the existing pavement on this eight-tenths of a mile section of 12 Mile Road and repaving with two layers of asphalt.
  • Adding a continuous center left-turn lane throughout this section of 12 Mile Road.
  • Placing curb and gutter where appropriate.
  • Improving drainage.
  • Reconstructing side street and driveway approaches at 12 Mile Road
  • Improving pedestrian crosswalks to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) .
  • Upgrading traffic signals within the project.

Tree removal and advance drainage work will begin in the fall of 2024 and will include intermittent lane closures. The majority of the construction work is expected to begin in the spring of 2025 and be completed in the early fall. During the project, westbound 12 Mile will remain open throughout project, but the road will be closed to eastbound traffic.

The detour route for eastbound traffic will be 12 Mile to northbound Middlebelt to 13 Mile to Northwestern Highway and back to 12 Mile.

Also, throughout the project, Inkster Road will be closed at 12 Mile. For one phase of the project, the north half of the Inkster Road intersection will be closed. During a subsequent phase, the south half of the intersection will be closed.

While the north half of the Inkster intersection is closed, the detour route for northbound Inkster traffic will be 12 Mile Road to Middlebelt Road to 13 Mile Road and back to Inkster Road. The detour route for southbound Inkster traffic will be 13 Mile Road to Middlebelt Road to 11 Mile Road and back to Inkster Road.

During the closure of the south half of the Inkster intersection, the detour route for southbound Inkster traffic will be 12 Mile Road to Middlebelt Road to 11 Mile Road and back to Inkster Road. The detour route for northbound Inkster traffic will be 11 Mile Road to Middlebelt Road to 13 Mile Road to Northwestern Highway and back to Inkster Road.

The project is expected to cost $3.4 million and will be paid for with federal funds and RCOC dollars.

Anyone wishing to attend the meeting who requires special accommodations in accordance with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or Title VI, including those requiring language assistance, should call RCOC at 248-645-2000 and ask to be directed to the Engineering Department to submit your request.
