Funding for Phase One of SEMSIM has come from several federal grants earmarked for the project. Additionally, the four agencies are each contributing a 20 percent match. In total, including federal funds and local match, nearly $13 million has been dedicated to the project. It was thanks to the vigorous efforts of U.S Senator Spencer Abraham, U.S. Representative Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick and the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) that the project has been so successful in receiving federal funds so far.
