Beverly Hills, Mich. — The following projects may cause traffic delays on Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) roads between May 22 and May 29 or may start shortly thereafter.

It is RCOC’s goal to conduct road improvement projects in a way that interferes with traffic as little as possible. This list includes both Road Commission projects and projects conducted by others, under permit, on roads under the jurisdiction of the Road Commission.

Please note: This information is subject to change. Projects can change from day to day, and traffic delays can develop in a matter of minutes due to weather, emergency situations, etc.

Asterisks next to projects denote new projects or a change since last week.        

 

ROAD:                       Livernois Road, Long Lake Road to Avon Road

Project:                       RCOC is resurfacing this section of Livernois. There are intermittent lane closures and motorists should expect delays.

Community:               Troy and Rochester Hills

Completion Date:      June 7

 

*ROAD:                     Pontiac Trail from Orchard Lake Road to Old Orchard Trail

Project:                       Beginning approximately May 28, RCOC will resurface this section of Pontiac Trail.

Community:               Orchard Lake Village

Completion Date:      By July 1

 

ROAD:                       Coolidge Highway, Webster Road to Woodward Ave.

Project:                       RCOC is resurfacing this section of Coolidge Highway. At least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction during construction, but motorists should expect delays.

Community:               Royal Oak

Completion Date:      Open to traffic by July 3

 

ROAD:                       Baldwin Road, 1-75 to Indianwood Road

Project:                       RCOC is resurfacing this section of Baldwin Road. At least one lane will remain open at all times, but motorists may be directed by flaggers and experience delays.

Community:               Orion Twp.

Completion Date:      June 14

 

ROAD:                       Eastbound 10 Mile Road, Huron Street to Ferndale city limits

Project:                       RCOC will resurface this section of eastbound 10 Mile, which is also the I-696 Service Drive, beginning likely by the end of the month.

Community:               Ferndale

Completion Date:      by June 14

 

ROAD:                       Greenfield Road between 13 Mile and Webster

Project:                       The City of Southfield has closed two lanes of this section of Greenfield Road so the city’s contractor can install a liner in a water main under the road. The lanes are expected to remain closed until approximately June 18. During that time, the road will be reduced to one through lane in each direction and a center left-turn lane.

Community:               On the Southfield/Royal Oak border

Completion Date:      Approximately June 18

 

ROAD:                       11 Mile Road between Campbell and Troy streets

Project:                       The City of Royal Oak has closed the outside lane in both directions of this section of   11 Mile Road for a streetscape and water main project.

Community:               Royal Oak

Completion Date       Depends on work progress, but probably in July

 

*ROAD:                     East Holly Road between I-75 and Tindall Road

Project:                       The Road Commission has issued a permit to Precision Pipeline to close this section of East Holly Road beginning May 28 to make an emergency repair to an Enbridge Energy pipeline. All ramps on and off of I-75 at East Holly Road remain open. During the closure, the detour route for East Holly Road through traffic will be Dixie Highway to Grange Hall Road to Saginaw Street/North Holly road and back to Maple Street/East Holly Road and vice versa. However, heavy trucks are not allowed through the Village of Holly, and should follow Dixie Highway to Grange Hall Road to I-75 and vice versa.

Community:               Holly Twp.

Completion Date:      July 2

 

*ROAD:                     Rochester Road from just south of Mack Road to the southern Leonard Village limits

Project:                       RCOC expects to close this section of Rochester Road beginning approximately June 3 to resurface the road. During the closure, the detour route for through traffic will be Lakeville Road to Lake George Road to Leonard Road and back to Rochester Road and vice versa.

Community:               Addison Twp.

Completion Date:      This is the first phase of a two-phase project. The first phase is expected to be completed in mid-September. The second phase involves resurfacing Rochester Road from south of Lakeville Road to Mack Road. The second phase will begin as soon as the first phase is completed.

 

Completed since last week:

- RCOC has completed the resurfacing of Stoney Creek Road, Orion Road to Rochester Road, in Oakland Township.

Beverly Hills, Mich. — Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) Managing Director Dennis Kolar has announced that most RCOC road construction projects will be suspended at 3 p.m. Friday, May 24, for the Labor Day holiday.

            Work will resume after 6 a.m., Tuesday, May 28.

            “The Road Commission wants to ensure that its roads are as free of obstructions as possible during this period because of the increased holiday traffic we typically see on the Memorial Day holiday,” Kolar stated. “That should help to ensure safe and convenient holiday travel for motorists in Oakland County.”

            Kolar also prohibited the hauling of most heavy earth-moving equipment and other large contractor equipment on county roads (vehicles that require a permit to travel on county roads) during the holiday. Some lane closures will be eliminated for the holiday.

Beverly Hills, Mich. — The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will conduct a public information meeting Thursday, May 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. about the upcoming widening of Tienken Road between Rochester and Sheldon roads in Rochester Hills.

The meeting will take place in the media center of Stoney Creek High School, 575 E. Tienken Road (at Sheldon) in Rochester Hills (please enter the school through the north entrance, which is closest to the media center).

The meeting will be “open house” format, with no formal presentation. Anyone can attend at any time between 4 and 7 p.m.to discuss the project with RCOC staff or review plans.

This section of Tienken will be reconstructed primarily as a three-lane road, with a continuous center left-turn lane. There will be right-turn lanes at side streets and major driveways. The road will not be reconstructed at the Rochester Road intersection.

The project will involve reconstructing the road with asphalt pavement and concrete curbs and gutters. Included in the project will be the resurfacing of the Tienken/Sheldon roundabout and installation of raised, concrete pedestrian crosswalks and lighting at the roundabout.

Also included will be drainage improvements and pedestrian pathways on each side of the road.

During the project, this section of Tienken will be closed to through traffic, although access to homes and businesses throughout the project will be maintained at all times. The detour route for through traffic will be Rochester Road/Main Street to Avon Road to Dequindre Road to Runyon Road and vice versa.

The project is expected to start in early June with the road expected to be closed shortly after June 14.

The project is expected to cost approximately $2 million. Of this amount, $1.6 million will be covered with federal funds. The remaining $400,000 will be shared by RCOC and the City of Rochester Hills.

The work will be performed by Pamar Enterprises of New Haven.

Beverly Hills, Mich. — The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) is celebrating a milestone this year – it turns 100 years old.

Tomorrow (Saturday, May 18), RCOC will host a centennial open house at the agency’s Waterford Township garage. The public is invited and the garage will be outfitted with a variety of displays depicting the various agency functions and the way they have evolved over the last century. Also at the open house and always popular with children and adults alike, there will be a “touch a truck” opportunity, with a variety of the agency’s heavy equipment used to maintain the modern road system. Themed snacks, hotdogs and beverages will be available.

The Waterford Garage, part of RCOC’s Paul Van Roekel Service Center, is located at 2420 Pontiac Lake Road (at County Center Drive West). The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an opening ceremony at 11 a.m.

The agency was created in 1913 following a vote of county residents in 1912, and the appointment of the first three road commissioners on May 6, 1913. The newly minted Board went on to conduct its maiden meeting on May 7, 1913.

“This agency has a very proud history,” Stated RCOC Chairman Greg Jamian. “Virtually from our inception, this Road Commission has been on the cutting edge in terms of road maintenance practices and equipment.”

In the intervening years, the agency has frequently dealt with traffic congestion as the county has witnessed population boom after population boom. “From the start, we have been dealing with overcrowded roads,” Jamian said.  “As a result, we have become a national leader at congestion management, through our high-tech traffic signals system and adoption of new designs such as roundabouts. Traffic professionals from around the world continue to study what we do.”

Jamian noted RCOC is also respected as a national leader in the field of traffic safety. “In 1978, we made safety our official number-one priority.” Jamian said. “Prior to that, Oakland County had a traffic fatality rate that was much higher than both the state and national rates. Since 1978, safety concerns have guided virtually everything we do, from project selection and design to road maintenance activities. As a result, today Oakland County has a traffic fatality rate that is half of either the state or national rates.”

RCOC maintains the largest county road system in Michigan with more than 2,700 miles of public roads under its jurisdiction. It also maintains nearly all 230 miles of state highways in the county, 1,500 traffic signals and more than 150,000 traffic signs.

Beverly Hills, Mich. — The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) will conduct a public information meeting Wednesday, May 22, at 7 p.m, about the upcoming replacement of the 13 Mile Road bridge over the Rouge River in Bingham Farms.

The meeting will take place in the media center of Bingham Farms Elementary School, 2340 W. 13 Mile Road (between Lahser and Telegraph roads) in Bingham Farms. There will be a formal presentation followed by an opportunity to discuss the project with RCOC staff or review project plans.

The bridge replacement project is expected to start June 17. During the project, 13 Mile Road will be closed to through traffic between Telegraph and Lahser. It will be completely closed at the bridge. The road is expected to re-open to traffic by Oct. 18.

During the project, the detour route for through traffic will be Lahser Road to 12 Mile Road to Telegraph Road and back to 13 Mile and vice versa.

The bridge replacement project will cost approximately $2.5 million. Of that amount, approximately $2 million is being paid for with Michigan Local Bridge Program funds (a combination of state and federal dollars). The remainder is being shared by RCOC, Bingham Farms and Oakland County general government (through the Tri-Party program).

The existing bridge was built in 1926. The work will be performed by Z Contractors Inc. of Shelby twp.
