Every wonder which road agency or community owns a particular road?
In Michigan, there are three levels of road ownership or "jurisdiction." They are: state (the Michigan Department of Transportation or MDOT), county (your county road commission -- in Oakland County that's the Road Commission for Oakland County or RCOC) and cities or villages.
So, all roads fall under the jurisdiction of MDOT, your county road commission or a city or village. Michigan law does not allow townships to have road jurisdiction, so all roads in townships are either county roads or state highways.
In cities and villages, subdivion or neighborhood streets belong to the cities and villages, while main roads can be either city/village streets, county roads or state highways.
To help you better understand which roads in Oakland County fall under which jurisdiction, we provide the road jurisdiction maps below.
On he map below, click on the township or part of the county where the road is located that you are interested in, and a road jurisdiciton map will open for that area.
